Ghosts are taking over York this Halloween
The past has truly come to life, thanks to York BID’s incredible sculpture series ‘Ghosts in the Gardens’ and – for a limited time – ‘Ghosts After Dark’.
“Historic sculptures in beautiful settings” – Ghosts in the Gardens sees 70 ghostly pieces of artwork scattered throughout the city centre for you and your family to find.
Ghosts in the Gardens
If you’re looking for an excuse to spend some time in the haunted city of York this half-term holiday, “Ghosts in the Gardens” is an excellent choice that’ll take you from famous spots to hidden gems, as you try to spot 70 unique sculptures.
There are Saxons, Romans, Vikings, Victorian characters, and even small animals; each translucent wire-mesh figure represents a different layer of the city's haunted past.
Some locations have just one ghost; others have up to 15! And there’s a real range in sizes, so keep an eye out – luckily, you can pick up a handy map from the Visitor Information Centre on Back Swinegate to get started.
Ghosts in the Gardens remains completely free to enjoy and will run until Sunday, November 1, when the trail will sadly end.

Ghosts After Dark
And if you fancy something a little spookier, there’s Ghosts After Dark – a brand-new after-hours event that weaves in live storytelling and interactive performers as you walk through the centre.
As darkness descends, visitors can step inside the King's Manor courtyard and Library Lawn, and explore the exclusive Night Market, with stalls from York Ghost Merchants, JORVIK Viking Centre, The Potions Cauldron, Villains Rum, The York Dungeon, and more.
Six different storytellers will be performing, including characters from JORVIK and The York Dungeon, as well as The Deathly Dark Tours and The Wild Man of the Woods.
Bookings are now open – Ghosts After Dark runs exclusively from November 4 to November 8.spot!
