Treasurer’s House
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and visit one of York’s most historic houses, once the residence of the Treasurers of York Minster. Located in the shadow of the Minster, Treasurer’s House is filled with period furniture and has a stunning collection of antiques and art, along with a beautiful walled garden.
In the medieval period, the house was the home of the Treasurers of York Minster, whose duty was to look after the cathedral’s affairs until the office was dissolved in 1547. The house was completely rebuilt in the late 1500s and was visited by King James I in the following century. After falling into disrepair in the 1800s, the property was rescued by Frank Green, a wealthy local businessman who renovated the house between 1897 and 1900, before donating it to the National Trust in 1930. The property boasts an attractive award-winning garden, along with spectacular views of York Minster.
Ghostly Roman legionaries have been seen marching across the house’s cellar, apparently following the path of an ancient road which once ran beneath the spot the property was built on.
