The Winning Post

The Winning Post is famous in York for hosting many bands, including local English alternative rock group, Shed Seven.
Built by John Smiths brewery of Tadcaster, The Winning Post opened in 1939 and was designed and located close to York Racecourse to attract race-goers.
Constructed with a large function room, local band Shed Seven appeared at the venue in the early days of their career.
Formed in York in 1990, the group went on to become part of the Britpop scene, having a string of hit singles, including ‘Speakeasy’, ‘Going for Gold’ and ‘Chasing Rainbows’.
In 2024, almost thirty years after their debut album, Shed Seven scored a number one in the official album charts with ‘A Matter of Time’.
The band’s name was taken from a numbered railway shed just outside of York Station.
